Fruit Stripe

photos by Helena of Brooklyn Blonde

Outfit Details:
shirt - Cardigan
Topshop overalls
legacy duffle bag and shoes (shoes are old) - c/o Coach
MAC Russian Red
Tom Ford Nikita sunglasses (on sale!) - c/o Shades Daddy

Helena and I recently went to Chicago, where we split our time between Public Hotel and the guest room of my longtime friend HollyIf you follow any of us on instagram, you already know that we pretty much ate our way through the city - and I'll give you a list of where we ate, stayed and shopped, in an upcoming post. We really enjoyed our stay; the city is great (and clean!) and the people were so friendly. What more can you ask for than good food, great company, and a leisurely itinerary?
p.s. Helena told me I looked like Fruit Stripe gum and I agree...hence, the title. Who doesn't love a multicolored zebra?

Florida Heat and Seasonal Fakery

Outfit Details:
Rebecca Taylor blouse (c/o)
Free People shorts
Coach Alexa sunglasses (c/o)
Coach Legacy Haley Satchel

This is as pulled together as I could possibly look in South Florida's intensely humid, hot hot heat. It's kind of funny to think back to my days as an actual resident. Though the temperatures were completely inappropriate for seasonal dressing, I somehow managed to sneak in layers and boots...a lot. I don't know what to tell you, except that I never liked dressing for warm weather, and often stayed indoors with central air. Seriously, half of my Myspace and LiveJournal photos involved some sort of over the knee boot or a jacket, or both. I guess when you don't have seasons, you have to make believe.

Makeup Monday: Tricolor Tips Tutorial

Whenever I'm in Florida, my sister Amanda always does my nails. I'm not as skilled at painting my nails (I paint my fingers and then clean it up) but love nail art, so I am always excited when she does a design that I can recreate at home. Believe me, if I can do this, so can you. Try it out and see what you think!
Polishes used: Color Club "In Theory", Color Club "New Bohemian", Color Club "On the Rocks"
*Please note that I do not have the polishes with me right now (I'm in Chicago) and I forgot to write the names down, so these are my best guesses. If these are the wrong colors, I will update them as soon as I get home.

p.s. Thank you to my sisters Amanda and Tessa for their help with this tutorial. Amanda did my nails, Tessa took the pictures, and I just got some cool nail art out of the deal.

little pups and little girls

Urban Outfitters Pins and Needles crop top, Anthropologie Waverly A-Line Skirt, vintage flower comb, Seychelles Haven't Got A Worry platforms (c/o), Illesteva + Zac Posen cat eye sunglassesMAC Captive lipstick

I know I already posted this outfit here, but I just really wanted to post the one with me and my tiny partner in crime. I was away from Miku while in Florida, this week - and since Helena and I are Chicago bound for a few days (we leave Saturday), I'm already missing her again! And speaking of precious little girls, I have some very exciting news. My older sister, Nicole, is having a baby girl! She just found out yesterday. I was crossing my fingers for a girl (I'm not gonna lie), and I'm over the moon excited to have another little niece. Two nieces and two nephews: how perfect is that?

hands down.

Outfit Details:
Karen Walker dress - Anthropologie (p.s. they're having a big summer sale online and in stores right now)
striped shirt - J.Crew factory outlet
Seychelles Ampersand heels (on sale for $49.50!)
Zac Posen x Illesteva cat eye sunglasses
Cambridge Satchel (c/o the company - mine is old, so I linked to the beautiful mint green version)
DIY flower clip
MAC Captive lipstick

First things first: I am not really sure why my hands look so creepy in the close up photo - I've been trying to figure that out for the past few minutes. My hands aren't all that pretty anyway, but they don't usually look like creepy witch hands. Oddly enough, when I was little, my mom used to tell me I had beautiful hands and could be a hand model (really, mom?!). I believed her and truly thought that was a possibility, until my little sister got angry with me and scratched them so hard they bled. I still have scars on my hands from that, and my hypothetical hand modeling career went down the toilet. Oh, the woes of a young girl with weird, weird dreams.

Now that I've gone on this strange rant about hands, let's talk about the dress. I found it super on sale at Anthropologie and picked it up right before Bobby and I went to North Carolina. They always have the best sales at the one in Meatpacking: sales so great, they make me forget about my crushed hand modeling dreams...if only for a moment. Did I mention it has pockets?

and she's got knee high socks

Outfit Details:
vintage hat
Lily Ashwell Hana top - c/o Lily Ashwell
skirt - thrifted and hemmed shorter
over the knee socks (old)
Old Navy trench (old)
belt - thrifted
Illesteva + Zac Posen cat eye sunglasses
Seychelles Ampersand heels
Patricia Nash tote (c/o) - $198, available at Macy's

I've long admired tooled leather bags; I've wanted one for as far back as I can remember. Back when I was a child, it was all about matching my little western belt which had my name on it, and fitting in with the "horse girl" culture I was so fond of. But later in life, the desire for a tooled leather purse continued, and after writing about it on my livejournal (oh, nine or ten years ago), a very nice reader surprised me with one. She saw it at one of her local thrift shops and remembered me posting about it, so she picked it up and sent it my way. It was such a warm and thoughtful gesture, and I carried it for years - until it was somehow lost in one of my moves. That happens a lot. Perhaps it was the childhood want, or maybe the overwhelming kindness that the last purse represented to me, but when Patricia Nash sent me this tooled floral leather tote, it was like Christmas morning. I can't believe I didn't immediately pair it with my matching belt, but there's still time (you know I can't resist a little bit of matchy-matchy). The beauty is in the little details of scalloped edges, metallic inlay, and peekaboo fuchsia lining - and it can fit everything this crazy bag lady carries around. I know I've done a "What's In My Bag" feature before, but sometime I should probably do a "What's Really In My Bag" feature. It's practically its own convenience store - but a lovely little detailed one, at that.

I'm With Her

Outfit Details:
Rachel Antonoff "I'm With Her" Sweatshirt - Modcloth
lacey denim shorts - c/o Free People
thrifted shirt
Bass + Rachel Antonoff shoes (on sale)
old heart shaped sunglasses
Saffiano leather mini satchel - c/o Coach
MAC Russian Red lipstick
I've gotten so much wear out of my "Birdie Forever" sweatshirt, I went ahead and picked up Rachel Antonoff's new sweatshirt. Despite the fact that it's [almost] summer, I've already gotten to wear it several times: on rainy days, road trips, and simply around the house, to name a few. The best instance was when I met up for drinks with some friends, and Helena was sitting to my left. People must have thought I had a hot blonde girlfriend! Lemme holla atcha, Brooklyn Blonde!

Wavy Hair Tutorial (For Short Locks)

(click for larger image)

At long last, the wavy hair tutorial is here! I'm having fun playing around with different ways to style my new(ish) shorter hair, and this is one of my go-tos. The best part is that it's not supposed to be perfect, so it takes very little time from start to finish. This is a slightly photo heavy tutorial, so I'm going to put it behind the cut - please make sure you click through to see all the steps.

Get your tools ready (comb, curling iron, heat spray, hair spray), and continue reading after the cut for step by step instructions!

My Week, On Instagram

It's been a couple of weeks since I've done one of these, so let's call it my weeks, according to instagram. Follow me at @keikolynn

Left to right, top to bottom:
1) I'm going to do a more detailed post about the equipment I use, but here I'm using my Canon 5D Mark II. Original post and details, here.
2) Sheila Frank bracelet and gold Ginger + Liz polish.
3) I fell in love with this vase (at least I will be using it as a vase) at an antique mall in Virginia, and thankfully it was a total bargain.
4) Bobby and Vester look so cute while they're sleeping. For the record, I do not look good while I'm sleeping, and if he ever posts a picture of me sleeping, he's in big trouble.
5) Kitty Boos infringes on Vester's territory. As you can see, it's marked with a tattoo...that's legit.
6) The roses at Alice and Olivia were extremely photogenic on my recent visit.
7) An instagram to match this post.
8) Bass Loves Rachel Antonoff shoes.
9) A boater hat and red lips.

Weekend Uniform

Outfit Details:
Felix Rey Kissy Face Umbrella
Saint James Drawstring top and mini satchel (c/o Coach)
7 For All Mankind boyfriend jeans
Madewell Sidewalk Skimmers
Elizabeth and James Lafayette sunglasses
thrifted belt
MAC Russian Red lipstick
If you catch me on the weekends, I'm almost always in a variation of this outfit: an oversized top, boyfriend jeans, flats. I guess you might call it my weekend uniform. I wore a pair of skinny jeans yesterday and realized how much I've gotten used to living in boyfriend jeans. Once you get used to the comfort, it's difficult to go back!

Family Affairs

Outfit Details:
Family Affairs Minnie Jumper - c/o Emerging Thoughts (use code KEIKO for 10% off any purchase)
thrifted vintage shirt
HUE socks
Kate Spade sunglasses
ASOS Prose platforms
Rebecca Minkoff camera bag (link to similar/on sale version)
MAC Russian Red lipstick

I think I've decided that there isn't a single thing that Family Affairs makes that I don't want in my closet. This little Minnie Jumper is the latest addition, and I love the mod feel of it. Someone commented on my instagram that it reminded them of Moonrise Kingdom, and I agree (and am obviously a fan)! I've only had a chance to wear the Like a Virgin dress once so far (it was stuck in California for a little bit) but I've been living in my Cafe Zoe dress. It's the easiest, cutest little cotton dress to throw on- and I highly recommend living in cotton dresses during the summer. In the meantime, every chance the weather gets even the teensiest bit chilly, I take the opportunity to throw on an extra layer. I'm basically the opposite of everyone I know...I'm not that fond of summer (don't shoot me). Take me back to my schooldays and I would be singing a different tune. That, or give me my own little swimming pool...one or the other!

p.s. For those of you wondering how I style my hair this way, a tutorial will be up next Monday!
