Makeup Monday: Red Lips Forever

Top two photos: Backstage with MAC at Kenneth Cole. Third photo: Backstage with MAC at Zac Posen. Last photo: Model at Alice and Olivia, makeup by Stila.

It's no secret that I'm crazy about a red lip. I used to be all about a statement eye; smokey eyes were my signature when I was in my early 20s. But sensitive skin/eyes forced me to ease up on such frequent use of shadow and loads of liner, so I discovered a new main love for instant impact: bold lipstick. Red, in particular, makes me feel instantly pulled together - even on days when I feel like forgoing eye makeup completely. I have an arsenal of reds, and since seeing the perfect ombre red lip rendition at Kenneth Cole, I've been mixing darks and brights and doubling up on lip liners to recreate the dimensional look (I'll post a tutorial, if you want). But we all have our favorites, and my most used tube in the bunch is MAC Russian Red: it's matte but not too dry, cool but not too blue, and lasts forever.

The hunt for the perfect red lipstick seems to be a popular topic with strong opinions, so now I want to know: What's your favorite red lipstick?

  2. love red lips, but in winter i struggle with chapped lips, so I haven't done it as much as I would... my favourites are by Bottega Verde, an italian brand and my favourite shades are brick red and cherry!

  3. Lady Danger by Mac

Russian Red is my winter go-to red lip, as my skin is so pale. As the weather heats up, I turn to Lady Danger for a more spring/summer toned red.

  7. I'm looking for a matte dark red/burgundy lipstick, can you recommend some products besides the Mac Russian Red? Would be great if you could do a post about it!

    1. How dark? NARS Terre de Feu (dark red) or NARS Volga (more of a very dark, cool burgundy) might be what you're looking for. Or MAC Diva. Or Revlon Wine Not!

  8. Hey guys, i'm currently doing a survey on blog readers for my bachelor thesis. You would help me a lot if you could take 5 minutes of your time to answer the questions: https://www.soscisurvey.de/BA_Jana_Haus/

  9. I absolutely love my Stila Fiery lip stain. I usually put a base pencil red on first (it helps keep in the moisture) and then put the stain on top. It lasts for ages and doesn't feel too leathery.

  10. NARS Semi-Matte in "Fire Down Below" - I'm super pale with a yellow-y tone to my skin, so this is the best pure dark red (not too orange, not to blue) for me! I also like the semi-matte because it gives your lips the matte look without showing TOO much of those winter flakes that just won't come off no matter how much you exfoliate...

Also love Revlon Just Bitten Lipstain in Gothic - a fun, cheap lipstain for everyday!

  16. I'm a mostly red lip gal too! My favorites are by NYX! fFor a cooler red I go with their soft matte lip cream in "Amsterdam" or if I want a darker matte like what is trendy now I got with their matte lipstick in "Alabama"

  17. Flamenco by NARS. It's more of a strawberry red. I love that you can apply it very sheer for almost a berry stained look or build it up for a bright red.

  18. Love red lipstick. I just wanted to say your blog is an inspiration to me and I finally started a blog because of it. I would love if could just spend a little time to check it out & write a comment about what you think I could do or improve on. Also I'm sure everyone says this to you, but you're a gorgeous mix. I'm mixed asian too, so we should be friends lol. Come to California I'll show you around.

  19. In winter, I'm all about MAC Russian Red and my new loves, Deeply Adored and Absolute Power. When summer rolls around, I gravitate towards orangey reds like Scarlet Ibis or NARS Heat Wave.

  30. I'm something of a lipstick beginner. I like the way it looks, but I'm not so good at touching up and maintaining. When it comes to red, I use Revlon Just Bitten Lipstain. It applies like a texta and stays on forever.

  32. For years I would think to myself, "I wish I was one of those girls who could pull off red lipstick." Then I realized that the only difference between those girls and me was that they wore lipstick and I didn't. So I just started wearing it, and I now I wear it all the time!

My go-to is Mac Viva Glam I. It's similar to the Russian Red, but just a little less bright, which is better for me for every day wear.

  35. Hi Keiko! My go-to red is NARS Cruella or NARS Damned

I used to be a huge fan of eye looks too until I had sensitive skin/eyes issues. For me, it was drying eyeshadow primers, eye makeup-removers that strip everything, scratchy brushes, and certain ingredients that make my eyes water or more irritated.

I stay away from most dual-phase removers (except the Milani one) and I now use fatty triglyceride wash-off balm removers like the Clinique Take the Day Off Cleansing Balm. I don't use Too Faced, LORAC, or UD eye primer and got rid of my scratchy brushes.

I can't use a lot liners either and that seems to be connected to the ingredient cyclopentasiloxane (which unfortunately, is in nearly everything--from Bobbi Brown to MAC Fluidline to UD 24/7 eye pencils). Pot liners from Revlon and Rimmel seem to work alright for me and I'm still experimenting with shadow primer. For now, NYX Shadow base (the pot one in nude) works okay without irritating me but I want one that holds shadow as well as the UD one. Hope this helps you!
