Makeup Monday: Etsy Weddings

Today's Makeup Monday was specially created for the launch of Etsy Weddings. I'm a longtime shopper and occasional seller on Etsy, so I was really excited to be a part of this (and even more excited to see upcoming features)! You can read the step by step instructions on the site, but here are a few extra tips for your wedding day makeup:

 - Don't stray too far from the makeup routine you are comfortable with; just perfect it. You want to look like you!
- Avoid products with SPF on your big day; it doesn't photograph well. If you've ever wondered why your face looks ghostly pale in flash photographs, it's probably because you had SPF in your moisturizer or makeup.
- Keep blotting papers nearby to soak up excess oil without having to cake on makeup.
- Do a test run before the day of your wedding. Check the makeup in natural light, artificial light, and with flash.
- And of course, go for the waterproof mascara and liner. That should go without saying;)

What's in my bag?

I'm going to be honest. I usually have wayyyy more stuff in my bag, like crumpled receipts, gum wrappers, and business cards from people I can't remember meeting. At any given point I have a pair of flats in my bag, a bottle of water, a book, a lamp, small child...you name it, I've got it. But the beauty of documenting something like this is that you have a chance to clean it out and look less like a Mary Poppins/hoarder hybrid. So, I should probably call this...

What's in my bag after I clean out all of the other junk:
North/South tote - c/o Echo
Ray-Bans (they hold my glasses or my sunglasses, whichever ones are not currently on my head)
keys with mini sewing machine keychain from Juicy Couture
Rory Beca  for Power Support USA iphone case
old as dirt iPod nano because I don't replace electronics unless they break
vintage, hand painted makeup case (that's her Madgesty)
MAC Love Forever! pro longwear lip creme
Laura Mercier undereye concealer
Bare Minerals Mineral Veil
Urban Decay blush brush
MAC concealer
Urban Decay 24/7 liquid liner
Ricola cough drops
magical wallet thingy from J Crew
dollar bills, because you never know when you might want to pop into Flashdancers, am I right? (also, yes, I'm using a bobby pin as a money clip)
Hello Kitty Bandaids with matching bandaid case
hair ties
Advil

p.s. Don't forget to enter Echo's "What's in your bag?" contest to win a handbag!

star bright

Outfit Details:
hat - H+M
sequin star top - thrifted
never nudes - Free People
Patent North/South Tote - c/o Echo
lipstick - MAC Love Forever!

True to form, I'm running seriously late for something right now, so I'm just dropping in to give you a glimpse of one of my super casual outfits. Lately, I've been wearing a lot of casual outfits...I think it has something to do with the weather and me being under the weather.

Christine, Lindsey and I will be hosting a fun event with Echo on the 10th (more details on that, later). In anticipation of our event they asked us, "What's in your bag?" Well, not to keep you on your toes or anything (because I know you all are dying to get a peek at my MetroCard), but that post will be going up later today, because I have a crap ton of stuff in my bag and I want to actually have time to list it all. In the meantime, enter on Echo's Facebook Page for a chance to win one of their bags!

Edit: I was mistaken - you don't have to submit a picture, just enter:)

a pair of new shoes and a punk rock show to see

Outfit Details:
chambray shirt - c/o Madewell
mustard sweater - thrifted
toffee ikat jeans - c/o 7 For All Mankind
Gemma heels - c/o Cynthia Vincent
bag - c/o Rebecca Minkoff (from last summer)
bracelets - Forever 21
rings - vintage (gift from mom) and Simple Twist on Etsy
nails - China Glaze Aquadelic
lipstick - MAC Russian Red
umbrella - cheap piece of crap

Well gee, I wonder why I've had a hard time kicking that sickness. I mean, I only wore open toed shoes in the rain and then went out to a show the same night (I wore a more sensible outfit for that, at least).

I want you to know that it was difficult for me to refrain from the obvious pun when titling this post. And if the pun isn't obvious enough, it was "It's raining ikats and dogs." I love a good pun, but I love The Shape of Punk to Come even more. How the two can coexist in one's world is beyond me. I'm a weird girl. But it keeps people on their toes, it does.

Romeo

I've been really sick, and just when I started feeling a lot better, I went to a [really awesome] show and came back feeling 100 times worse than before. I needed a day to rest and recover, so I'm sorry there was no new outfit post! In the meantime, here is a picture of my horse, Romeo. Isn't he a little lover boy?

Ramblin' Rose

Outfit Details:
Sunny Cut Out Top and Rayne Pleated Shorts - c/o Corey Lynn Calter
bow belt - thrifted
tights - HUE
Rebecca Minkoff bag and Kelsi Dagger shoes - Gilt
lipstick - MAC Love Forever!

Corey Lynn Calter asked me to be their guest editor for the month of April, and since it's one of those lines that pretty much screams my name, I happily accepted. I'm particularly loving this blouse, which I had to pair with the matching shorts to make a romper-esque ensemble. I already wear this dress to death; I think I will follow suit with this pretty little blouse. You can see some more of my favorite picks on their site here, and check out several other ways I've worn CLC here!

Makeup Monday: Look TV Makeup Academy

I teamed up with Look TV to bring you Makeup Academy, with quick and easy tutorials via my favorite medium - video! Okay, so video is actually my least favorite; who likes to watch and/or hear themselves talk? Hint: not me.  So please, go easy on me!

I wanted to start with this video on basic contouring and highlighting because it's one of my most frequent requests. While you can completely transform your features with contouring, for this video, I simply demonstrated how to enhance them and bring out your bone structure. Watch the video to see how easy it is.

Note: Use a matte powder or cream for contouring - anything with shimmer will reflect light and make the area pop instead of recede (and you want the latter). Your highlight, however, can be shimmery or matte. I actually prefer to use matte on my forehead and chin, and usually go for subtle shimmer on my cheekbones and brow bone.

Check out more of my video tutorials on Look TV  (blush, brows, and liquid liner are already up) and  don't forget to subscribe, because more are coming soon!

Makeup Monday: Restores Dazzle

cheeks: MAC Cremeblend Blush in Restores Dazzle, MAC lipstick in Violetta (LE - check to see if your local store or counter has Heroine in stock for a similar look, or try Revlon Berry Haute), Urban Decay Stardust Lip Gloss in Glitter Rock

Lately, my eyes have been super sensitive - probably because I'm under the weather. I've been forgoing my liner and even mascara on most days, which is hard on my ego because my eyes all but disappear without them. I have short, straight lashes that refuse to curl, and even mascara does little to enhance them (proof: I'm actually wearing a coat in the pictures). But I'll take a tiny blow to the ego before eye pain any day, so I've been embracing the naked eye and focusing on something I don't give enough love to on this blog: blush! I'm going to point out the obvious here and say that the name Restores Dazzle is all too appropriate for this creamy blush; it takes my sickly pallor and gives it life! Paired with a pop of bright, glossy fuchsia on the lips, you'd swear I haven't spent the last week in bed with a box of tissues, loads of cold medicine, and a Golden Girls marathon. I hope.

Lilla P Anniversary

When you get to know the person behind a brand, it can make or break your opinion toward it. I started wearing Lilla P about a year ago, right before her first store opened, and on Thursday I co-hosted their anniversary party. I can't believe a year has passed! Getting to know Pauline (the lovely lady in the top picture, left) has made me love the brand even more - she is genuinely kind and incredibly generous. I love a lady who gives back to those in need!

Despite being a bit under the weather, I had a great time hosting along with Christine and  Natalie. Thank you so much, Pauline, for having us there for your big celebration. Here's to many more years of success.

Just a few quick snaps from a particularly gloomy, rainy day in South Florida. I got back to New York, late last night, just in time for tonight's Lilla P event. Please come by and see us, have some champagne and shop with an exclusive discount - and don't forget to RSVP for a gift bag!

Good morning, starshine.

Outfit Details:
leather jacket - c/o Coach (old)
Darling Lace Dress - ASOS
Honeycomb Envelope Clutch - c/o Corey Lynn Calter
Seychelles Good Intentions Wedges - c/o Seychelles
rings - Forever 21 and Banana Republic
lipstick - MAC Vegas Volt

Florida makes me want to wear nothing but brights, splashy prints, and of course, sunglasses. Even when it's seemingly gloomy outside, the sun is still bright enough to merit shades - hence the state's nickname, "Sunshine State". I end up putting sunglasses on every time I step out but can't wear them without one of two songs popping into my head: "The Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades" or "Boys of Summer" (you got your hair slicked back and those Wayfarers on, baby).  It can be a little distracting. But it's just the way my brain works.

I tend to have a song in my head to go with just about every moment of my life. When I can't think of one that fits, I make one up (like The "Little Little" theme song that I wrote for a cat I rescued who now belongs to my sister - and not to go off on one of my tangents, but as if on cue, Little Little just jumped up on the bed like a unicorn and meowed). I even like to start my day with a particular song, which is eventually retired and replaced with a new one. Tom Petty's "American Girl" has been going pretty strong for awhile now, but others have included The Wannadies "You and Me", Phoenix "1901", Justin Timberlake "Da** Girl", The Bird and the Bee "My Love", Broken Social Scene "All to All", Michael Jackson "PYT", Violent Femmes "Blister in the Sun" and a bevy of others. What can I say? I like to wake up with a little bit of happy music.

As for my personal theme song, I suppose it would still have to be "The Prize Fighter" by The Velveteen. Ten years and I still haven't replaced it. What's your theme song?

Hef

Outfit Details:
Trina Turk pants and matching jacket - c/o Trina Turk (via gift card)
San Francisco shirt - vintage, thrifted (I've had this since for years and years...yet I've never been there)

This matching set came in the mail the day I was leaving for Florida, and I couldn't resist trying them on before leaving for the airport. They were as comfy as pajamas, so I immediately changed into the ensemble for the plane ride. I dressed it down with a vintage shirt and flats, but I plan on dressing it up with some heels and a blouse - perhaps this week. I can already sense that these pieces will be in steady rotation; wearing clothing that feels like pajamas is pretty much a dream. Ask Hef, he lives it on the daily. Although, his are actual pajamas. Pajamas and so many girlfriends...what a life.

As I stated before, I'm currently in Florida. Last weekend was my mom's birthday (on Easter!) and I came down to celebrate and spend time with family. It's a short trip, because I have to be back in time to co-host a fun little event with Christine and Natalie(details below). I've featured Lilla P on the blog before, and if you attended our blogger garage sale to benefit Women In Need, you might have been lucky enough to scoop up some of their pieces for amazing prices - they donated huge boxes to benefit the cause! Needless to say, their kindness and generosity only made me love the brand even more. Please come out and see us at their in-store celebration to mark their one year anniversary. Styling and beauty consultations, snacks and bubbly, discounts - what's not to love?

Make sure to RSVP early - you will get a great gift bag!!
