Okay, so I wasn't actually going anywhere; I'm a total fraud. My cousin's husband has this great suitcase that's covered in travel stickers, from its past owner's life. I've always loved anything with a story, and this has its story all over the surface. I started wondering why I haven't collected anything from my modest travels. I only buy postcards when they're ancient (I just picked up this gem from 1910) and I couldn't really think of anything else I'd be able to collect within the confines of my Brooklyn apartment. But after a little thought, I realized that I have a different kind of collection that can't be put into just one category. Everywhere I go, I search for something one of a kind, whether it's vintage, antique, or simply handmade. On this trip, I came home with a trunk full of goodies: a vintage chenille bedspread, lots of artwork for the walls (old and new), that 1910 postcard (with writing on the back), a slew of vintage hats and a couple of dresses. They may not be your typical touristy souvenirs, but I'm pretty sure I'll hold onto them a lot longer than anything from a gift shop.

I always collect little stones or shells, and my boyfriend has started picking flowers for me on every walk we go on. Just the little ones with lots of colours! I keep these in jars and in old film canisters and even though they get mixed up and I often couldn't tell you which came from where, I love having little pieces of the world around me.

ReplyDeleteI collect sugar packets! I started 12 years ago on my first trip abroad to Paris. Free souvenir! And then it just kind of continued. I have boxes and boxes full of sugar packets from different places!

That is such an AMAZING suitcase! You've inspired me to seek out something one-of-a-kind on my first trip abroad, which will be in March 2013 in Paris and the French Riviera. :) I'm beyond thrilled, and I hope to study French language and literature in college, so this is really the opportunity of a lifetime. You've made me even more excited to go...grr! Gotta wait a few more months! <3

I also like to come back with small momentos. Usually a cute piece of antique or artisan jewelry. That way it doesn't take up much room. Oh, or a good vintage book. I can never pass up an old mom and pop book store.

I love sending postcards while on trips (still haven't decided whether the people getting them actually care that they got postcards though...). I have, in the past, gotten christmas ornaments when their were ones I liked. I figured they would always remind me of the special memories every time I took them out. But you don't see as many nice Christmas ornaments anymore. I also got children's picture books featuring the place I visited both times I went to Europe ("This is Rome" and "The Three Golden Keys" which was about Prague. Both were in English. I got Paddington Bear and his book from England). But then, I am trying to get a job as an Elementary Teacher so....
ReplyDeleteSuch a fun look!
ReplyDeleteI love holding onto maps and tourist pamphlets! I have a box full of them!

Obviously Obsessed
Like you, I love to collect vintage when I'm on the road. It's something that I know I'll hold on to, and even if it's unrelated to the place, I'll still remember where I found it and what I was doing. I also like to collect regional cookbooks, when they're available. Even in small towns, you can often find small cookbooks compiled by the town historical society or a similar group. I love reading about the food and traditions that make up a town or city.
ReplyDeleteJust like you, I love to take unique items home from my travels. The most recent thing I found on my trip to Budapest was a felt pillbox hat with a velvet bow that I love and will always remind me of Budapest. I also love to bring local designers' items home with me as well as beautiful little things to decorate my home.
