I'm forgoing today's usual outfit post and instead, wearing a hoodie to show my solidarity with Trayvon Martin's family and friends. Please post or tweet a picture of you in your hoodie with the hashtag #WYHWTM (Wear your hoodie Wednesday for Trayvon Martin) and spread the word about Trayvon Martin and the injustice that surrounds his untimely death.
Most of you have probably been following the news of seventeen year old Trayvon Martin's tragic murder in Florida, and I hope you are as outraged as I am. If you're unfamiliar with his story, young Trayvon was shot and killed by George Zimmmerman, who claimed it was self defense despite all evidence proving that not only was Trayvon completely unarmed, he was simply walking home and minding his own business, even telling his girlfriend that he was being followed just moments before he was killed. Zimmerman, who has a violent and criminal history, was not charged, claiming self defense despite the fact that he pursued Trayvon and was specifically told not to, as you can hear on the 911 call. Frankly, I'm disgusted that it was so easily dismissed as self defense despite concrete evidence that it was unprovoked. How horrible to lose a child - and then to be told their killer won't be charged? I've been physically ill just thinking about it.

AMEN KEIKO LYNN!
ReplyDeleteI agree with vanessa, amen to this!

so sad that things like this continue to happen all over the country. thanks for using your voice in his memory.
ReplyDeleteSo nice of you to do this kind of post! I can't believe that things like this happen nowadays. That somebody can roam free and do this again to somebody and no one would care to put him behind bars for forever.

That sounds AWFUL. I'm so disgusted that this happens in our own country.
ReplyDeletethis breaks my heart..i can't even believe what happened to this poor kid, walking around talking to his g/f on a headset! so glad you're sharing this injustice keiko!
ReplyDeleteThis is a terrible story. I researched it thoroughly yesterday & it just broke my heart. I've signed the family's petition. Thanks for posting this!
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot for share it! I don't know this history, it's horrible.

ReplyDeleteThank you for posting this girl. I'm right there with you- outraged and disgusted at the complete lack of justice here.
ReplyDeleteThumbs up to you for using your beautiful blog to spread the word about this terrible injustice. I have been following the story and I am so saddened by it all. I am glad that people like you are using your reach to spread the word!
ReplyDeleteAt this point I'm desperately holding on whatever little faith I have left in humanity.
ReplyDeleteCompassion towards fellow human-beings is slowing dying, crushed under the heel of prejudice. May it be gender, sexuality, ethnicity, religion or appearance.
I take this incident as an insult to all the citizens of the world.
The real fight is not in the court, but in the hearts and minds of the people of the world.
Everyone has a right to belong where they do.
Rest in Peace, Trayvon. You will not be forgotten.

I've liked your blog for months now, but today I grew respect for you as a person.
ReplyDeleteThanks for saying what needed to be said.
Thanks for posting this and bringing more attention to this grave injustice. I'm hoping that the more people support Trayvon's family, then the police will finally do what they should have done 3 weeks ago and arrest Mr. Zimmerman. After that then we'll have to work on changing Florida's archaic "Stand your Ground" law.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you. So thankful for this post and for you raising awareness for this tragic crime.
ReplyDeleteI actually hadn't heard about this. That's horrible!

just to reiterate the comments above - AMEN Keiko Lynn!

Thank you for posting this Keiko! I'm wearing my hoodie as we speak.
ReplyDeleteI admire you so much for posting about this. I've been following this story and nothing about it makes sense to me. I'm not sure how the police are justifying that this man can claim self-defense for shooting a child that was armed with nothing but a bag of skittles. What a crying shame. I hope justice is served very soon.

How the hell did this guy even have a registered weapon with a criminal past? All the elements to this lead to one big f*ck up. I am disgusted with American Law Enforcement. This boy was pursued and targeted because of someone's bigotry!
ReplyDeletePrayers to Trayvon, his family and friends...I hope Zimmerman gets the justice he deserves.

Wow, did not know about this horrible thing!! Being European my disgust has been focused on what happened in Toulouse and Switzerland. Being a mother myself I can only shed tears for all these parents loosing their children in such stupid ways. The world seems rotten.
ReplyDeleteYou are such a good person Keiko! It is truly a tragedy what has happened and I can only pray and hope for justice and peace with Trayvon's family. Zimmerman does deserve the fullest extent of the law to be put on him and the fact that he claimed self defense and got away with it only makes me wonder and question our justice system even more.

So true, Keiko! That murderer needs to be locked up!
ReplyDeleteWow. I had no idea and thank you for the information. I have also had a friend that was charged for sexual conduct of a student of his and he had been charged falsely! There is no protection on innocent teachers.
ReplyDeleteHow do you put the ones that are actually guilty away, and keep the innocent safe?? I just don't understand sometimes.
Many thanks and much appreciation to you for helping to spread the word on this! If each of us does our part as you have, bit by bit we can change the world and make it a more just and safe place for all. Each one teach one!

Keiko - thank you for using your leverage to help get justice served.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a tragic! I know you're a native from Florida and glad to see your post. Scares me that this type of shit happens. Little kids getting shot for nothing, just like in the Bay during NYE a few years ago no good cop shot an innocent kid.

this is so awesome of you keiko!
ReplyDeleteThis was a lovely post- though heartbreaking. I long for a time when we will no longer see crimes like this.
ReplyDeleteThis has been one of the most heartbreaking stories I've heard in awhile. I'm a little late on the hoodie, thing, though.. as I'm just now reading this. But good for you for bringing light to this issue. Hopefully for Trayvon's memory, his family is able to have some sort of closure, and peace, someday.
