If you know anything about Florida you probably know that the farther South you go, the less Southern it gets. I'm from South Florida, and if I ever claimed myself as Southern in front of my real-deal Southern relatives, I might get a smack in the face, followed by a "Bless her heart." That's how they soften the blow.

I'm no dyed-in-the-wool Southern country girl but I'm no true city or suburbs girl, either. I guess I'm somewhere in between, always trying to find some sort of balance. I grew up barrel racing and catching toads (who were always named Fred - always), barefoot in the dirt and covered in horse hair. I live in the city now (and love it), but I still feel more comfortable in a pasture full of horses than I will ever feel in a room full of people - I'm getting anxiety just thinking about it. If only I could have a pasture full of horses just outside of the city. Wouldn't that be perfect?

Though they've had a long time to adjust, there are still members of my family (I'm looking at you, Grandma) who still can't believe I wear makeup and dresses...and moved to the NYC. Truth be told, I sometimes can't believe it, either. Life is funny.

p.s. this was Thursday's cancelled post - I'll be posting more of last week's posts this week. I'll try and catch up as soon as possible.

  2. As a reader from back in the LJ days, I just wanted to say you've been in my thoughts. I'm so sorry for your loss and for how it was handled--a dear friend of mine was subject to a very similar situation with the dog she grew up with and living away from her family hometown. Hang in there, girl, you're amazing.

  7. you're so pretty, your glasses look great on you.

I was watching How to Marry a Millionaire last night, a movie filmed in 1953 starring Marilyn Monroe. She was wearing glasses just like yours but with a little bit of sparkle and oh lord, how glamorous she looked in them!

  8. I love this post! As a born and raised Alabama girl who moved to LA I am in the same situation. I love the city but miss my farm!

  9. Keiko, you are so beautiful! This is such a charming summer look. I wouldn't mind living my life running free on a pasture either (even though I live in the city). Adore your RM tote and those mesmerizing heels.

  13. You look beautiful babe...the epitome of a true southern belle...gracious and humble, modest and demure...always the classiest lady on the block.

So sorry to hear about your loss babe...I would never wish anyone would have to endure the loss of a family member...My little furries are my life and although we have to celebrate all the treasured moments, we also must not forget all the wonderful love and life brought into ours through the passing of theirs...Sending you lots of love and light K!

  17. this outfit makes you look even more elegant than you already look (if that even possible) I feel the same struggle with balance, My roots are in West Virginia, But i live in Cleveland, I still find peace in the countryside, and sometimes wish I could run away to the south, and live in the hills lol.

  19. "If you know anything about Florida you probably know that the farther South you go, the less Southern it gets." lol The same goes for Texas. I've had people refuse to believe I was from there because I don't have an accent...at least not a southern one. :)

    ps love the outfit!

  20. I must have that hat! If you were here, I'd snatch it right off your head. Sorry, that sounded mean. I'd still steal your hat, but I'd feel bad about it. :)

PS, I read the post about your horses. I'm so sorry for your loss. I've loved and lost animals too.

  22. Very adorable! Those shoes are very very cute! I'm actually moving to Nashville, Tennessee in two months...and I'm from the North, though currently living in Colorado - grew up on a farm right outside of Philly, so I'm kinda wondering how I will do in the South. Could be interesting - I myself am by no means a southern bell! haha All the moving makes for an interesting melting pot of culture now engrained in me. Thanks for sharing your adorable outfit! :)

  31. the hat...the dress...you'd make one fine southern belle :) And i think it's fantastic that you can thrive in both the country and the city! :)

And i just went horseback riding for the first time in years last week...they are SUCH STUNNING ANIMALS. My heart broke for you when I read in the last post that you lost your sweet horse. Animals can become like family members...and i can tell you loved Shaun with all your heart. Hugs to you.

I live in the midwest(near STL) and my family is from the south,Georgia and Alabama. I'm considered a yankee to them and they make fun of my accent..I don't have one! haha So true, insult folowed by "bless her little heart" they crack me up!
I hope you're feeling better Keiko, your animals are lucky to have you as their human. You have such a kind heart and I know you made your ponys life more special than you know.

  44. I definitely know how you feel. I grew up a tomboy with horses on the outskirts of Las Vegas, NV (of all places). I was born and raised in Sin City and three months ago I moved to Virginia and I feel so out of my element because I'm not southern, I'm not a city girl.

Just wanted to say that you and your blog are absolutely lovely and I love reading it!

  50. I've been reading your blog for a little while, but I had to comment for the first time today because I understand 100% about wanting that pasture right outside the city! I love the culture of the city but I need the peace of the countryside, too.

    Also, your hat is adorable.

  70. Adore this outfit. As much as I've tried to deny it all my life I'm a Southern girl. Born and raised in the South (now, apparently, with an actual Southern accent to prove it) and although I hate it at times, deep down I love and appreciate my roots (even though I get strange looks all the time when people see my face then hear me talk). You're definitely in my thoughts, as well as probably all of your readers', and I hope things get better for you soon :)

  79. I forgot to mention too... I totally relate to your way of putting your love for the city and your love for green land. I was born in a small town, but love the city, but can't stay there either because if I'm in one too long I miss the other. Weird.

  80. I love the way that grey dress looks on you--the grey fabric against your skin tone works beautifully. I wish I could make that grey fabric work for me (and no, I don't mind going paler just to get that effect either).

I definitely know the feeling of being in between. It's why I moved back to the country--though now, I kind of wish I was in the city. Grass is always greener. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  81. You're so right. I always say we have to go north to get to the 'south'. Did you live in Parkland? I'm thinking that because you went at my school and that's the closest place to live in the country with horses and all that.
