Rock you like a hurricane

Outfit Details:
Sheer feather cardi - c/o Simply Audrey
top - Forever 21
vintage Coach belt - thrifted
denim shorts - H&M
lipstick - MAC Please Me

As a Floridian who has lived through more hurricanes, tropical storms and tornados than I can even count, I am less than thrilled about this Hurricane Irene business. I think I'm more nervous about this one than I ever was in Florida. We, for the most part, were prepared for the hurricanes in South Florida. We boarded up all of the windows, had gallons and gallons of water and flashlights for days, took the horses to a concrete barn on the racetrack and "hunkered down," as the news anchors loved to say. I slept in the bathtub of my grandma's house during Hurricane Andrew. It was normal for us to do such things during Hurricane Season. We would be without electricity for days or sometimes (in the case of Hurricane Charley) weeks. But we were prepared for that business. Heck, I was even outside during two tornadoes that touched down on the ranch and wrecked the place.

Here, we're a little more vulnerable. No one has storm shutters or boarded up windows and the stores are already out of supplies. Everyone relies on mass transit, which is shutting down tomorrow and could very well stay that way if there is a lot of damage. There's a good chance it won't be that bad (fingers crossed) but I'm just a little worried about how unprepared everyone is - including us. I'm contemplating packing up the kitties and pup and going on a little road trip. But where should we go?

Goddangit, I moved out of Florida and the hurricanes followed me. Sorry, New York! It's all my fault!

p.s It bothers me, just as much as it probably bothers you, that I'm touching my hair in every picture. Sooo annoying.

anyway, good luck hunkering down. i hope it's not so bad... though we've been getting some pretty crazy storms here in toronto as well.

  4. I like the minimal makeup, a pretty girl like you doesn't need too much makeup. Though it's fun to see you all glammed up too!

Hope the hurricane passes without much destruction for you all and things are back to normal soon. In the mean time, snuggle with Miku and you'll feel instantly better!

    1. your hair is down (and I touch mine all the time in pictures... makes us look more candid I guess haha) and it looks bombb!
    2. I loved reading about your hurricane ventures! Major brownie points. Hope it doesn't get too bad on the east coast xo

  15. :(

As a Louisiana native living on the Jersey coast, I feel your pain. Nobody here seems to have any idea how to prepare, clear off patios and lawns, tape windows, get food & water prepped. I'm very nervous for our neck of the woods...

Hope you & the pets stay safe during the storm (& good luck in case you have to evac!)

  18. Oh Keiko- I too cannot get away from the hair touching photos, its like the security blanket of poses. But you look pretty, not annoying.

Let hope the storm just passes over Brooklyn while we're asleep and we wake up to a bright sky.

    Stay safe,

p.s. I feel for you and everyone else about to get caught up in that hurricane... I moan about living in England but oh golly, I can't imagine having to go through that - must be so scary! Stay safe x

Thinking of all you New Yorkers. I grew up in hurricane country too, but it must be pretty scary for all the east coasters who've never been through this and don't know what to do. Be safe!

You could always stay in here in Philadelphia. Not much to do, but we're only getting rain. And if you really do need to leave, I think the National Guard has set up shelters at many of the Universities in the city. Be safe!

  36. I feel the same way, as a native Floridian living near the eastern shore of Virginia. In Florida, I knew what to expect... and everybody else knew what to do too. But here? Nothing. I'm far more nervous when the people around me are unprepared.

On Thursday when it was clear that the hurricane wasn't going to just disappear, I called my management company and asked them if they were going to board the windows. They told me that I wouldn't need it because I live in a condo. (WHAT?!) Luckily (for me), the storm won't be as bad as I was initially afraid it would be.

  37. i slept in the bathtub during andrew, too!

  38. I'm totally digging this look. Such a great mix of materials, texture and print.
What kind of nail polish are you wearing? I've been looking all my life for it.

    ps- stay safe this weekend!!

  39. yeah that is so scary. When storms like this hit areas that are not used to this kind of thing the aftermath can be much worse than it would be in an area where they are ready for it. Scary scary scary. I hope things don't get too bad up there. Bed safe!

  43. Missouri doesn't get hurricanes!
I've been in a couple when they've hit the Gulf Shores, AL area (my dad lives there). I think it is fair to say that if an area doesn't get hit regularly, people are unprepared.

Our biggest problem this year was how unprepared people were for the snow storms we got. Ridiculous.

    STAY SAFE!

  44. I actually had to go back to realize that you were touching your hair in every picture but it doesn't bother me :).

  68. Wow, I hope you're okay! I heard about the massive evacuations in New York! Thankfully here in DC, nothing happened... I was worried a heavy tree would fall on my roof, but not even small branches broke in the garden! There was a true panic climate for nothing... Hope the cats and Miku aren't too afraid, animals tend to feel natural disaster much strongly and tend to stress out a lot at any changes. Poor babies!
    Take care,

    Love,

Call me self centered, but whenever you post laid back/ rocker chic outfits, I feel like you do them just for MEEEE! :) However, I think the real reason I feel that way is because you're just that good. You have such a lovely diversity in your outfits that you have something for everyone! Even sloppy rockers like me lol. >.< (<--Not calling you sloppy in the slightest! Whatever, you get it hee hee)
