summer lovin'

Outfit Details:
ADAM pleated chiffon and lace maxi skirt - gift from ADAM
white t-shirt - gift from Lilla P
belt - from a Cynthia Vincent grab bag (I won it at an event hosted by Lindsey)
La Curva sandals - gift from Blowfish Shoes (code BFKEIKO15 for 15% off)
vintage sterling and gold elephant ring - from my mom's store, Hourglass Consignment
rhinestone ring - Forever 21
cuff - LOFT (it's no longer available but I found a cool alternative here)
Era sunglasses - gift from Juicy Couture
Rebecca Minkoff MAC Clutch - gift from Rebecca Minkoff
lipstick - MAC pro longwear lipcreme in Unlimited

Last week, the folks at ADAM invited a group of us to their store to pick out an ensemble and meet Adam Lippes. Needless to say, we were like kids in a candy store. Christina picked out a knock-out sequin gown, Jenni decided on a neon dress, Karen went for a dreamy white maxi dress - I don't think any two people walked out with the same thing. I ended up picking this beautiful lace and chiffon maxi skirt and a red silk and chiffon blouse, which you'll see later. I guess this skirt is a little fancy for a day that mainly involved walking around the Brooklyn Flea, but with a plain white t-shirt and sandals, it was the perfect, most comfortable summer ensemble. But enough about clothes - did I tell you we met a cat on a leash? His name is Biscuit, and he loves long walks around Carroll Gardens. He just came right up and plopped down next to us. He's already on youtube.

  21. When I had a cat I wanted to start walking him, but I was kind of worried about having him exposed to the elements. I started practicing in the house though and he liked his leash lol.

Great skirt, it's blindingly white which I love. I'm kind of in a white mood lately, need more.

  31. Everything in you wear on your blog these days seems gifted, and it seems to have effected your style (less color/more commercial/less homemade and fun). I don't know if that's good or bad.

  51. $400 for a skirt?!?! Are you kidding me? I miss the old Keiko who bought everything from a thrift store and made things herself instead of wearing things given to her.

I still have a Postlapsaria printed shirt from probably 5+ years ago, so I've been a long time follower. It's awesome you have all this exposure now but things have definitely changed.

  52. aww, your cat is so cute! (i was just about to comment on how much i like your outfit, but the cat stole the show).

  54. Jamie, I have a hard time understanding this issue. I feel lucky to be given beautiful things that I normally wouldn't be able to afford. Yeah, I probably wouldn't go out and spend $400 on a skirt - because I am not made of money - but you had better believe that I would not turn down a gift like that. Did you ever notice that most of the accessories I wear are gifts from my mom? Does that make it any different? Should I not wear those, because I wouldn't normally walk into a store and spend a couple hundred dollars on a vintage ring?

I still buy a lot of my clothing from thrift stores, and I make clothing seven days a week. But the beauty of getting gifts like these is that I can spend my time making clothing to sell - and not just wear - and I get to wear the beautiful things I could only dream of before.

I am sorry to write a freaking novel about this, but it kind of hurts me when I see or hear things like this. It makes me feel like since I grew up poor, and have always been on a tight budget, I shouldn't wear things that are nice and are given to me. I know it's not what you really mean, but I can't help but take it that way sometimes.

  55. Okay, I don't want to delete my comment because that would be cowardly, but I wanted to say I'm sorry for being so defensive. I'm super defensive today for totally unrelated reasons and you caught me at a vulnerable moment. Sorry.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I'm sorry I wrote you at a wrong time. I haven't noticed any new clothing on Postlapsaria for a while now so I thought the majority of your time was spent advertising clothing received as gifts from other shops. You have an amazing talent and I thought that was put at the wayside. I feel like I haven't seen much Postlapsaria for a while, other than the recent fringe jacket you mentioned.
Coming from someone who can't afford to live in NY or buy $400 skirts (or receive them as gifts! Haha) I used to love reading your blog because of how down to earth and sweet you are. And that's why I still read. Not because of your expensive gifts or your giveaways. I like reading about your daily life outside all of that. :)

    ReplyDelete
  57. Jamie: I'm sorry I'm being sensitive; there's no way you would've known what my mood was, so no apology necessary, I put the website on the back burner for awhile because I was relying on wholesale and custom orders (easy money and got stuck in that cycle). Postlapsaria is still my full time job - and I'm working on shifting the focus back to online sales (on Postlapsaria.com). I mentioned it briefly in a recent post but I've just been busy working on lots of new stuff for re-opening. I also have something bigger in the works for Postlapsaria, but that won't be until late Fall.

I totally get what you're saying. But believe me, I have no intention of becoming a full time blogger. I make a supplemental income on here (and with freelance jobs) that allows me the luxury of keeping my clothing line intimate and mine. I'm grateful for what this blog has afforded me, and I just want to take advantage of the opportunities that come my way. But no, I will not stop making clothing. It's what I do with 90% of my time that I'm awake. What else would I do with my time? I have no other hobbies;)

  58. I think it's about being true to yourself, not losing yourself along the way, and perhaps recognizing that many of your readers can't afford to spend $400 on a skirt either, perhaps making this blog less helpful in terms of having fun style on a budget/diy/thrifting.

    ReplyDelete
  59. You look gorgeous in white! I love that skirt so much, so pretty and flowy, very summery! :)

Check out my blog: Principessa Gabriella

  60. Anonymous: I am staying true to myself. I wore this skirt because it's beautiful and I love it. I wore a $7 t-shirt, $1 belt and $17.80 shorts in my last outfit post - because I like those things. Price is irrelevant to taste, in my opinion. I can like something that is $400 or $40 and still be the same person.

I know some of my readers can't afford a $400 skirt. Some of my readers can. Some can see that skirt and get inspired to go out hunting for a vintage or cheaper version. That's why even though I can't afford *anything* in Vogue, I still subscribe. Because I am inspired by the styles and seek them out in other price points.

I understand your frustration, but I don't like that you are so quick to pigeonhole me. There are plenty of DIY/budget/thrift blogs out there. My blog is my personal style and life, not a guideline on how to achieve a certain look on any budget. I'm sorry to have disappointed you, but I refuse to lose myself by catering to only one mindset.

  61. Tracy: Sometimes my room looks like a tornado when I'm done getting dressed. hahaha

  62. Heather: I'm actually going to do a mini post on Farmacy. LOVE that place. I live in Park Slope, though. Walking distance...if I'm wearing flats.

    ReplyDelete
  63. p.s. Heather, I saw those old cars when I was there (saw your post) and thought it was an impromptu car show. I didn't realize they were filming Men in Black. haha!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Anonymous (about the rings): It's OCD. I can't have anything on my right hand or arm.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I really don't think that I am trying to 'pigeonhole' you, rather just drawing attention to the commercialization of your blog over the last few months- and I am not the only one to point this out. It's not a negative comment, rather just some feedback, I don't see what there is to be so defensive about. With all sincerity, it wasn't meant as an attack- rather, I was under the understanding bloggers like yourself would be willing to hear feedback from concerned readers that have been following you for years.

  68. i love this look! and the kitty on the leash is amazing. i remember when i was young, i tried to "walk my cat" and she got loose and hid under our porch, out-of-reach for like hours! it scarred me. but its nice to know some people/ cats can master it!
