To Grandma's House We Go

Outfit Details:
vintage gauzy dress - found in my old closet at mom's
tri-blend long sleeve top and knit scarf - GAP
tights - gift from my mom
dany platforms - courtesy of Jessica Simpson collection

From time to time, I get requests from readers to share my apartment decor, closet organization, etc. The truth is, I'm not crazy about my current apartment - and my closet has no rhyme or reason to it (seriously, I'm the last person you should ask about organization). I love my neighborhood, dislike my place. I have a tiny, dimly lit, railroad apartment and it drives me a little crazy to be in such a small space since I work from home. I had to set up shop in the living room because my office is more like a closet and there was no room to cut fabric, only to sew. It's not a huge deal to me; we are beyond fortunate to have a roof over our heads, let alone solid furniture and food in our refrigerator. But it's far from ideal and I've decided not to put a whole lot of time and money into decorating, since I would love to move to a larger place in the near(ish) future.

That being said, these pictures are obviously not of my apartment. They were taken at my grandma's home, in one of the guest rooms that I'm rather fond of. Though our birthdays are only a day apart in September, she is much more of a Virgo: extraordinarily organized and has everything just so. I like this room's decor in particular because it's very feminine without relying on typical girlie hues and is assembled from thrifty resources (second hand and discount stores) and a lot of elbow grease. The headboard was a find at my mom's store (she repainted it) and the dresser was a fixer upper that my mom happened upon, which was stripped, sanded, refinished and had its hardware replaced by my grandma. My very favorite part of the room is the framed photograph of my handsome great-grandpa, Papa, who is no longer with us but was my hero and one of the most influential people in my life.

Apparently my grandpa refers to this room as "Keiko's room" but strangely enough, it's actually the other guest room that served as my sleepover spot when I was younger. I've always known this room as my grandpa's closet, since my grandma takes up the closets in her room. Maybe I should take pictures of her closets and claim them as my own, because they're impeccable;)

Special thanks to my little sister Tessa Marie for taking my pictures!

  2. I am in love with this bedroom. I have a question actually! Do you and Bobby share the same interior design aesthetic? I live with my boyfriend as well, and find it incredibly difficult to find a medium that we can both be happy with (I'm incredibly traditional and feminine with how I like to decorate...he doesn't care just as long as he has all his band posters up!)

  6. Lauren: Sometimes, but not always. Luckily for me, Bobby is very flexible and compromising. He's also into antiques, which makes things easy for me. We pick everything out together, but I'll admit that I have vetoed a few things he wanted in the apartment.

  9. Good lord, thank you for an honest, real-life perspective! I love living vicariously through and gaining inspiration from a lot of lifestyle/fashion blogs. But it's refreshing to hear about how you deal with a not-so-great (aesthetic) circumstance in your everyday life especially coming from someone with such an incredible online fashion presence. The honesty is appreciated and I do hope you find a home that you love soon!

ps- i love what seems to be your go-to up do, it frames your face so nicely! and your grandma's house must be beautiful... :)

  17. I know what you mean about waiting to decorate. I simply can't wait until I finally have a space of my own (not renting) (or, as a less desirable solution, a place I plan to rent long term). It's so hard to decorate when you know it's not permanent.....when you move the aesthetic of the place might change, not to mention downgrading/upgrading size-wise.

That room is also super sweet. The head board was an excellent find and I love how the bedding complements it.

Also - love your outfit and shoes. J. Simp makes some of the best shoes at affordable prices (both in heels and flats). I love how her line is practical and fashionable both!

  42. wow, that space is nothing but gorgeous! taking old items and fixing them up always makes a room more meaningful opposed to just buying stuff and placing it nicely around the space. but it also give the room a story.

  53. As far as grandmother's rooms, this decor is really, really something else. And that something else is what you would call lovely. Really, really charming, even. Most grandmothers I know of have the most rotten taste in decor, but your grandmum has really refined taste. That headboard? Sheesh!

This room suits you to a T. I really hope to God that you get an apartment big enough to decorate to your liking. I can only imagine how gorgeous your home would be, based off of your wonderful ruffles and love of layering and color.

Happy New Year, Keiko. May 2011 be even more lovely than 2010.

    You bring me beautiful places.
