Makeup Monday: Red Lips

By popular demand, I did a mini tutorial on how to achieve a bold red lip. It may sound silly to have a tutorial on how to apply lipstick - but when it comes to dark, bright or opaque colors, applying straight from the tube is not the best option. That is, unless you a) are fine with looking like a clown or b) have amazing precision. Both of those are entirely possible but for the rest of us, it takes a few more steps to achieve a perfect red lip. For step by step instructions, continue reading after the jump.

p.s. If you want to try the winged liner you see here, follow my previous tutorial.

What I used:
CO Bigelow Rose Salve (to moisturize before application)
Sephora red nano lip pencil
E.L.F. lip brush
MAC Russian Red lipstick
E.L.F. small concealer brush
concealer

  5. Yay Russian Red! Dave got me that for Christmas (cause, obviously, he's the best boyfriend ever).

My main problem with wearing this lipstick so far is that my cheeks are very rosy naturally, which is usually a nice thing (don't even own any blush) but I find I look over made-up when my rosy cheeks compete with the lipstick. So, I am having to lighten up my cheeks. Le sigh.

  14. Wow, and I wonder why my lipstick never turns out nice. This is great! THANK YOU!
ps. I agree with Ashley you do have great shaped lips.

  15. Unfortunately I'm still too scared to try out this trend... I've only just gotten bold enough to wear /any/ lipstick! I feel so classy knowing I'm wearing it, even if it's practically the same shade as my actual lips x)

  16. I'm glad you all enjoyed the post! Thank you for the comments:)

Shannon: Russian Red seems like the perfect fit for you. How do you tone down the cheeks? Maybe try a tinted moisturizer, so it will still have a little flush?

Ashley: Thank you! It's funny because my lips are actually extremely crooked. One side is so much bigger than the other. It never really bothered me though.

Catherine: Have you tried Russian Red? It's my favorite. I have a plethora of red lipsticks but it's my go-to.

Kit: The nano pencils from Sephora are $5 and they are great. But honestly, most lip liners will do the trick - drug stores have a ton of them.

Erika: Thank you! I have no formal training, I just enjoy makeup:)

  17. Lauren: If you're uncomfortable with red lips, there's no shame in that! Nude shades can be just as pretty (I usually opt for neutrals).

  19. I think I'm going to give this a try..I usually just wear a redISH color..but not the full blown red....I'm gonna go for it!!!!
    Thanks!!!

  20. I either use a light amount of concealer or just brush loose mineral powder on my cheeks like one would put blush on. But, the tinted moisturizer idea is a good one. I'm going to try that and see if it gives a more natural finish on my skin.

    Thanks
