Childhood Friends

When I was little, I had two safety blankets: my actual blanket, named Bee-kon, and my panda, Snowball. My mom threw away Bee-Kon when I was still a wee one (I'll never forgive her) but Snowball has lasted through the ages. I've had her since I was two (possibly three), so now you all know where my panda obsession began. She was a get-well gift for my mom and was passed down to me. Family, friends, boyfriends and loves all know Snowball very well and accept the fact that I will never get rid of her. She has gotten discolored over the years but that's quite alright; I still love her all the same.

I'm 25 but I'm still very much a child at heart - look at that pouty face. Some might find it weird that I've held onto a stuffed panda all my life, but who says growing up means letting go of the little things that bring us happiness? Now, if I was still walking around with my Bee-Kon and sucking my thumb...that might be a little different.

Do you have a childhood "safety blanket"?

Love love,
Keiko Lynn

  1. Such cute photos. I love that dress. And yes. I still own basically all of my childhood stuffed animals. They are my little safety blankets.

  3. I have my rag doll Katy. I got her when I was one, and she was from a thrift store so she's pretty old. I still like to keep her in my bed, she's comforting. However, she's falling apart and I'm not exactly sure how to fix her. The fabric on her neck is ripping and it's very difficult to sew.

    Adorable photos. :D

  4. I still have a stuffed pink polar bear with a faded nose that I've cherished since 3 or so :)

  5. You are mosr definitely not alone in this one! I also have many a stuffed toy and a couple of dolls even from my childhood. Oh how I miss being a kid... xoxo

  6. I had a teddy named Jonathan Bear. He was made out of an old wool blanket, I still have him even though he's missing an eye. I also have Rebecca Bunny who has definitely seen better days, but I'll never get rid of either. My mother knew better than to throw them out, shame she didn't have the same for my barbie camper van :'( haha!

  7. I have a stuffed animal named Buddy. My parents got him at Expo 86 in Vancouver BC when I was 1. I sleep with him until this day. I will be 24 in 2 weeks. He is discolored, he no longer has ears, the paint on his face is worn out and faded (his face is plastic) and the box inside of him used to make a squeaky sound when you shook Buddy by the string on top of his head, which is also no longer there. My friends make fun of him. He is stitched up in every possible place. His head has fallen off several times. One time, I woke up in the morning and found Buddy in two pieces and cried until my mom was able to fix him (not recently, I was little)! My mom and my godmother would sew pennies into him when they stitched him up. I used to go to bed every night clinging to him because I thought my mom would come and take him in the middle of the night and hide him in a box in her closet. She never did. I can't sleep unless I know where he is. I love Buddy!

  9. My little sister has a "Barney" balloon she was given by my grandad at age 5, when she got her tonsils out. My sister is now 18 so that balloon has lasted 13years! STILL inflated! faded a fair bit, hes more of a light pink than purple, but still alive all the same.

  10. Your panda is cute, and I can completely relate! My father gave me a stuffed monkey when I was young..He worked nights and he told me that if I was scared to just look at monk-monk and know everything would be okay.

    I still have it!

  12. Remember the show Popples? I have one of those I've had forever, that I still sleep with. he's moved across the world with me and has had to withstand the mockery of many a boyfriend or friend, once he got called 'dishwater grey' - thats because he is old! I put him in the wash after that though. Lovely Popple. My baby brother tried to steal him when I was travelling and there was a brief period where a 3 year old and I weren't talking when I wanted him back upon my return... I love my popple he protects me from the nightmares.

    xx

  13. i'm 22 and i still have my baby blanket. i took it to college with me and i'm pretty sure it brought me good luck. ;) i still wrap myself up in it at night... it's kind of starting to fall apart but i don't care, i still love it and it's still comforting to me. i will keep it forever!

  14. i don't have anything that i still sleep with at night, but i do still have my teddy beddy. i got him when i was about 2 because i kept picking him up off the shelf and my mum would put him back but then i'd go and pick him up again! so she had to buy him for me hehe. i was a spoilt child who often had tantrums haha

  15. I have a really old baby doll that has some fingers bitten off and my sister drew on the eyelids with pens. She lives on my bed at my moms house right now but as soon as we buy a house she is coming with me and living in the spare room. She came into the OR with me when I got my tonsils removed. They had a harder time removing the baby then they did the tonsils.

  16. I got a bear names Mevrouw Beer (transl: Miss Bear). My grandparents gave it to my sister but she liked another bear. The story goes that I 'stole' it from her and it was mine after that xD. So Miss Bear is 2 years older then me :)

And I don't think it's weird hanging on to something like that. It's a thing from your childhood, something sentimental. Some days ago I felt really bed and fell asleep with my bear in my arms :)

    ReplyDelete
  17. Oh and when my bear needed to be washed my parents told me Miss Bear went for a little sailing trip. Thinking back I really wonder how I could fall for that xD

  18. i'm about to turn 25 and i still have my Binky on my bed. its my baby blanket that was a gift when my mom brought me home from the hospital.

weirdly, i left him at home during college, but when i moved into my own place i got REALLY homesick, so i brought him with me!

  19. I have a little bear that wears a white dress with lace trim and a bonnet with a pink ribbon. Her name is Kate. My grandparents brought her to the hospital for me when I was born. She still sits on top of my dresser :)

  20. First of all, you are so beautiful. I mean, WOW!

I don't think I had many stuffed animals growing up, which explains why I turn into a little girl and start playing with them whenever I see one. But I do have a nasty, ratty old cardigan from 10 years ago that I still love and wear around the house.

  21. I've got strawberry.
my gran gave it to my sister some month before I was born, then my sister gave it to me. I had it ever since. and when I sleep somewhere else than home, I always take her with me. everyone knows her, some are frightened, because she's loved nearly to death and her eyes just disappeared years ago, she had lost arms and legs, which all were sewn on again. she reminds me of my lovey dovey childhood and she's my one true best friend...

I've got a big obsession with strawberries and my favourite colour is red. so you see.^^

  22. Mine is a stuffed bear named Stich (yes, spelled like that). He has a snout like a raccoon, but he's lasted for about 24 out of my 25 years of life. He's still soft, too.

  23. i had a blanket as a child, too. i had one i kept until i was around 8 that never let go of. my mom threw it out on me one day when i wasn't looking because it was damaged by hurricane andrew and i was dead set on keeping the little patch i had left of it -.- she bought me a new one after i cried etc but it wasn't the same.

after that, i kept a lot of stuffed animals on my bed. so many that i would fall out of my bed every once in a while D: i still have a bunny from when i was 1 that my grandmother gave me that i can't get rid of.

  24. I have a large piece of purple silk with hemmed edges that I got when I was three or four and used to wear as a cape or a mermaid tail as the mood would strike me, or sometimes it was a blanket to wrap up my dolls. Somehow I've still got it, and now I wear it as a scarf. It's not really meant for that and it doesn't drape right, but I don't care. It makes me happy, and luckily it's a really nice shade of purple.

  25. i still have a teddy bear from when i was a little one named daisy bear. she's all discolored too! i don't sleep with her by my side anymore. actually, i don't even have her sitting out anymore...mostly because i'm afraid my dog will mistake it for one of his toys and distroy it

  26. Oh I love these pictures and your makeup! What a cute idea for a post too.

I had a brown teddy bear named Brownie and a blanket with a ruffled edge named Lacy (how original I know). Whenever it was time for Lacy to get washed, it was the end of my world because I liked the way 'she' smelled. We always went to the beach every summer to a kite festival and one year you could sign your teddy bear up to parachute down onto the beach from a kite. Needless to say I was running around in circles about to have a heart attack picturing my bear falling into the ocean. Regret consumed me. But he was fine. I was a dramatic child I suppose.

  27. Yes, I had a snow seal that my grandmother bought me from a grocery store. Her name was Susie. I'm not really sure where she is now these days, but she was my best friend when I was younger. Never gave me a hard time and was always at my side.

  28. Yes! First of all - I'm almost 30. I have a basket in our bedroom that hold all my childhood blankets. Of course I don't use them, but it's so nice to see them there. I also have a lot of my stuffed animals in a box somewhere hoping to give them to my own children someday.

  29. I still have my stuffed bunny (named the Bun of E) even when I couldn't fit him in my suitcase to get to college half a country away my dad sent him in a box for me and now he sits on my bookshelf ^.^

  30. I love reading all of these!

Di: I had a popples, too! I had a few, but my favorite was my punk rock popple. He had an earring in one ear and a guitar.

Jamie: That's a creative way to say you're washing a bear. Going sailing. haha! I'll have to remember that.

Diane: That's exactly why I stopped bringing Snowball to my mom's house. One of her dogs would eat her. But Miku knows not to mess with Snowball - she just cuddles with her.

Vanessa: That was the cutest story. I had to read it out loud to Kim because I thought it was so cute!

  31. This is so cute! My son actually has the same security blankets (one being an actual blanket) and a panda bear stuffed animal. We were in Wal-Mart picking up a couple things and I passed by it and in an effort to entertain him he grabbed it from my hands and hasn't really let go too much since. It's his dance partner, his conversational buddy, he reads to him and just loves him.

I still have my stuffed mouse "Bobby" in my closet and every now and then I take him out and give him a cuddle.

  43. i'm 23 and i still sleep have my mr. pooh bear. i've had him since i was 6. the only time i've ever slept WITHOUT a stuffed animal is when i go on trips (due to limited space!). i also have a growing collection of stuffed animals during the 3 years i've been with my boyfriend.

i'm glad that my bf accepts the fact that i still sleep with my stuffed animals and finds it cute :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. oh and i forgot to mention... i still have a MAJORITY of all the stuffed animals i've collected since I was a child. i've reluctantly given the rest to less fortunate family. i also still remember all their names. hahaha.

  45. He's cute. I still have a stuffed animal from when I was one or two. His name is Katty (I was apparently not very imaginative) and he's a pink and orange cat like creature. He's very worn and i've had to sew up holes and restuff him but its totally been worth it. I really can't sleep without him. He's been to NYC, DC, and even Guadalajara.

  55. The only constant in my turbulent life is a 2 foot high teddy bear I was given by my aunt when I was 1 1/2 years old. He sleeps next to me. Always. I'm 26, have been in steady relationships with others for the past 8 years and they are well aware that my teddy bear takes precedence. It's about comfort, and safety, and taking a moment for yourself cuddling up to it.

It's name is bluey, suffice to say it is now about 35 years old and I am 28 and no longer blue and very very transparant. I have a love of stuffed animals carried on from when I wasn't allowed to have pets at home, now I keep a tiny stuffed toy inside everyone of my purses.
