Petticoat

My little sister is in town, and I couldn't be happier. I'll be flying home with her, soon, but I haven't yet bought the tickets. I should probably discuss the date with my mom, but I guess I've just been procrastinating, trying to see how long I can get her to stay here. I took her by the school in our neighborhood, but she wasn't having it! Mom, you didn't read that...I am not trying to kidnap Tessa. wink.

So far, we have gone to Six Flags, Coney Island, all over Manhattan (from the bridge to uptown), Dylan's Candy Bar, the Brooklyn Flea, Momofuku Bakery-Milk Bar, etc. We've also done a lot of eating, shopping, and walking. Next up: Long Island (to visit family friends), picnic at Prospect Park (just a short walk from the new apartment), Bronx Zoo, more Coney Island, Central Park, and maybe The Met. Busy, busy bees.

The funny thing about hanging out with Tessa is that she's this unusual mix: a wholesome kid and a super mature young lady. She reminds me just how fun it is to be a kid (like I even need to be reminded), and still manages to make me look super immature, by contrast. She is definitely one of a kind, and is more put together and level-headed than anyone in my family. Sad, but completely true.

Also, about the hair. For those of you who voiced concern over the new, reddish color - don't worry, it isn't a permanent change. I'm sure I'll go back to my roots, when the weather changes. I can't even believe how many emails (and comments) I got about my hair; some positive, some negative. Whether you love it or hate it, just remember, it's just hair! It can be changed:)

Outfit Details:
50s/early 60s cotton day dress - Melrose Flea Market
Petticoat - Ebay, years ago
shoes - Payless
bag - vintage, Hourglass Consignment

-Keiko Lynn

p.s. I was just looking up ticket prices and they are super expensive! Does anyone know a legit site with cheaper fare? Or is that too good to be true?
p.p.s. Frenchy (my bicycle) went to a good home, with an adorable girl! Best part is, she happens to work on my block. Literally, I can see the store from my apartment. So amazing!

  1. Red is a really annoying colour. Even though you know it won't suit you, you try it out anyway... several times... I guess red is the colour you think would change something about you aswell, not only your hair. At least for me. Personality from a bottle, as they say.

  8. In love with the dress you wore !

I have a 50s cocktail dress like yours in medium minty green and alittle afraid to wear it out to work .

Scared it might be too over !

But seeing you wearing it, gives me courage to wear it out now !!

    Thanks :)

  9. You look like a princess in that dress! These photos make me happy, you look so joyful! =D I also think the red is absolutely marvellous with that shade of blue.

  12. the waistband on this dress is so so lovely! i have a really similar dress that issac mizrahi did for target years ago. i think this dress was his inspiration!

  13. I love that dress! I wish the flea markets around here had finds like that. And I love the hair. It's really not that dramatically different, and it's playful.

As for plane tickets, I usually buy through Travelocity or Southwest (but I don't think the latter would work for you). I've heard good things about Kayak for finding good prices, though I haven't used it myself.

  14. I like using yapta.com for airfare, but it's probably better to use when you're planning way ahead. they will notify you when the price of a flight drops, and you can track flights you're looking at. they already give you the cheapest list, but will get you a voucher to get money back if the price ever drops after you bought it.

your hair is cute! any sort of change and some people find it crazy. I don't see it so drastic to find it bad :( finally- i like your dress! it's cute :)

  15. You're just stunning in that flippy, full skirt, doll.

  16. I'm going to assume that flights are really expensive right now because it's summer vacation for most students and this is the "high season" for flying. I just bought my plane ticket to California and it cost me twice the amount that I would've paid if I flew out at the end of July rather than the end of August. Sigh. I definitely sympathize with you on the expensive flight front.

  17. You have such good style!

That is the prettiest dress in...the world.

At least as far as MY taste is concerned. :P

  18. what a beautiful dress! it looks a lot like a dress julie andrews wore in The Sound of Music, the one she's wearing when the captain falls in love with her! LOL :D

  19. OMG! I love your hair! I am actually gonna take a pic of u to my hairdresser to get it that color!!! It looks especially pretty against that turquoise background!

  20. Oh, I can't believe people can get it such a flap about hair. I think it's nice to go a little lighter in the summer anyway, it lifts your skin. So I think it looks beautiful on you :)

  21. Keiko,
If you visit Central Park, stop by the gardens @ 105th and 5th ave. It's my favorite part of the Park. Absolutely beautiful but sadly not enough people know it exists. - Lauren

  25. You look like an angel! Your adventures with your sister sound so fun, too.
I have about the same skin tone and natural hair color as you, and I think that the red really gives you a nice, summery glow. Like you said, it's just hair and it's always nice to try something new every so often!

  27. I agree with Emma, above. Unbelievable that anyone would get worked up enough to email you that they dislike your hair? For goodness sakes people go moan about your own hair. As a natural Auburn girl myself, I say rock it.

  28. you look ADORABLE in that blue dress... and i love your sister's tshirt ;)

  30. I have heard good things about studentuniverse.com for tickets, but looking on the site i think it might just be for college students and faculty... :( Good luck with the tickets! I usually orbitz or travelocity.

  36. I LOVE your new hair! A nice, softer look for summer. People need to know that stuff that can be changed like that shouldn't be fussed over.
    Love ya, Keiko!

  37. Flights:

Try lastminute.com or Farecast.com, which seems to have changed to this link:

    http://www.bing.com/travel/

That's a great one for tracking prices and knowing when to buy low.

  40. If you feel like driving to Allentown or the Elmira-Corning airport (thrifting road trip?) you could get one-way flights for as cheap as $29 to Orlando, via allegiantair.com. I've flown with them a lot, the smaller airports are nicer imo but they only fly on certain days and obviously they're a farther drive! If you go search it lays out the month and what fares are on each day. They start at $29 and then go up as the flight gets fuller.

Also, hi! I haven't talked to you in forever. I'm a lame commenter but I do keep up with your blog, nice to hear that you're feeling better <3

  41. Love this dress on you! Such a gorgeous color!

  42. Aw that dress is absolutely adorable. I love your blog as well as Postlapsaria. Keep up the great work. As for tickets have you tried bidding sites like Priceline or hotwire? In the slew of other websites, I'd also reccomend Orbitz, it seems to be a few dollars cheaper than expedia or travelocity. :D

  45. No -your red hair is absolutely stunning! Coming from a natural red head, I think it looks much better than your old brown hair. But of course, either way you are beautiful.
